Overview
Bulk carriers play a crucial role in global trade by transporting large quantities of dry commodities like coal, iron ore, and grains. With approximately 13,000 bulk carriers operating worldwide, the industry faces unique safety challenges. Unlike tanker operators, bulk carrier operators have historically lacked a dedicated forum to openly discuss and address these challenges.
The Informal Bulker Operators' Safety Forum (IBOSF) aims to bridge this gap by providing a platform for bulk carrier safety professionals to engage in open and collaborative discussions on the health, safety, security, and environmental(HSSE) issues they encounter in their daily operations. Guided by relevant data and current industry trends, the forum will foster a culture of shared learning and problem-solving.

About IBOSF
The primary goal of the Informal Bulker Operators’ Safety Forum (IBOSF) is to unite safety professionals from the bulk carrier industry. This informal platform facilitates open discussions on the day-to-day operational challenges related to health, safety, security, and the environment. IBOSF leverages supporting data to stay abreast of current industry trends, addressing concerns raised by participants to foster practical solutions.
IBOSF provides a unique opportunity for bulk carrier operators to collaborate, sharing insights and experiences. The focus is on preventing accidents and incidents that have historically plagued the industry. Rather than merely reacting to high-impact events, IBOSF aims to proactively tackle root causes, fostering immediate, fleet-wide applicability of practical solutions.

The framework behind it

Facilitation and Independence

HiLo Maritime Risk Management will initially facilitate IBOSF meetings. With its extensive safety database and expertise in statistical analysis, HiLo will provide valuable insights into the most critical safety issues facing the bulk carrier industry.
HiLo’s role as a facilitator ensures the forum’s independence and creates a safe space for bulk carrier operators to openly discuss sensitive topics without fear of repercussions. This fosters transparency and promotes more effective discussions.
